Match Report: Newton Abbot Ladies v Paignton Ladies, Sunday 15th January 2012
Newton Abbot 0, Paignton Ladies 57
Paignton Ladies travelled the short distance to Newton Abbot for the second leg of the local derby. Newton Abbot had beaten Paignton during their first encounter of the season and Paignton were determined to make amends.
Paignton started the game well and were quick to put points on the board when they elected to kick after a penalty was awarded in front of the posts. Soon afterwards Paignton centre, Rachel Cooper, scored the first of her four tries. This was shortly followed by another try from Cooper. Jordan Crook then put her first points on the board. Cooper finished off the first half with her third try. The Paignton forwards played their part in the game by dominating in the scrums and mauls.
During the second half Newton Abbot were depleted in numbers as a few of their players had to leave the field through injuries. Paignton dropped a few of their players in order to even up the numbers. Cooper continued the second half with another try. Crook put the ball down over the try line twice in order to complete her hat trick. Vicky Hodder also went over to score her first try for Paignton Ladies.
Lou Lewis converted all the tries bar one. Amy Cockburn and Rachel Cooper were named the forward and the back of the match respectively.
Paignton have never beaten Newton Abbot before in the South West 2 league. Paignton Ladies attribute their win to the great support they receive at their club and the recent input they have had from Paignton director of rugby, Mark Beavis.
